An explosion suspected to have been caused by the detonation of a suicide bomb along the Kano-Zaria road was reported on Friday afternoon.

The suicide bomb attack was reported to have been targeted at a group of Shia Muslims travelling on that route when the explosion occurred.

Members of the Shia group were participating in the Arbaeen symbolic trek, moving in a procession from Kano to Zaria in Kaduna state when the attack occurred, leaving a yet to be ascertained number of the worshippers dead while some others were injured.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as at the time of filing this report but notorious Islamist sect, Boko Haram, has been blamed for many suicide bomb attacks in recent times.

The Nigerian government and military authorities have many times reiterated the determination to meet a deadline to crush the insurgent group by December, with troops carrying out raids on suspected hideouts of the terrorists. The group has however in recent weeks carried out many deadly attacks resulting in the death of scores of citizens.
