Nigeria has a drug use monster waiting to explode

Nigeria has a drug use monster waiting to explode

Article written by Ajagzy Okunrin Ogun.

I want to talk about the DRUG EPIDEMIC we are currently pretending is not happening in our society. I am not talking about "Igbo" or weed o. That one is not a drug, only hypocritical nations still criminalize a NATURAL GROWING HERB that has being proven to have several medicinal and therapeutic uses and is not in anyway as harmful as perfectly legal tobacco and alcohol. No one has ever died of a marijuana overdose in the history of the world. Holland one of the countries where I first heard of legal marijuana now has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.
I am here to talk of the epidemic of dangerous synthetic drugs, cocaine, heroin, crack cocaine, opiates, barbiturates, codeine, Crystal meth and other meth derivatives like ecstasy. When I was growing up, Nigeria was only a TRANSIT COUNTRY for these kind of drugs, people smuggled them for money, but slowly Nigeria has now become a USING DESTINATION. I hear a kilo of cocaine now costs about the same thing on the streets of Lagos as in the streets of New York so rather than risk smuggling these drugs to nations with better security, The world's drug trade is shifting to Africa where the environment is lax as per law enforcement and regulation.. About ten years ago, a Lagos based wealthy Chinese guy was being chased around by NDLEA (I am sure he never went to jail) he was arrested ultimately for shipping drugs here by metric tons, in containers designated as building materials and I don't think he was ever prosecuted, money just changed hands about $60 million worth of cocaine was said to have being found in some of his containers. Somewhere in Delta state recently a full scale Meth lab was discovered, with meth cooking chemists imported from Mexico working somewhere in the Delta state hinterlands manufacturing insane volumes of crystal meth.

I consider myself to be worldly and I have being exposed to marijuana, tobacco and alcohol as early as when I was a teenager, but I was a full grown adult before I ever set my eyes on any of these synthetic drugs, I saw it mess with the minds of a few of my homies when I was in the university and I kept it at a distance though it also wasn't readily available like it is today. I decided "whatever does not grow naturally I am not about to mess with" and that is my policy for life. About 5 years ago, 4 young people died of heroin/cocaine related problems within a period of 2 weeks in Abuja. Some dealer was selling something that was killing people and a friend of mine lost her 17 year old son who was a UNIVERSITY student in Malaysia who came home for a holiday, he died after using some cocaine in a hotel room. Same for a young University of Abuja girl and also that same week a son of a prominent Yoruba King died in his ex-girlfriend's house while on a visit to Abuja, his death was also related to the same consignment of cocaine. I did a little investigation for my friend whose son died, the dealer who sold them the stuff was well known in the city. He came and peddled his stuff in a popular night club those days which was owned by a celebrity fashion designer in Abuja.
In Abuja and Kano, the drug of choice of young boys and girls is CODEINE which they get from the cough mixture "Benelyn and Codeine". They buy the drug off the shelf in pharmacies and you wouldn't even know what they are doing when they have mixed it with Sprite and they are drinking it out of a bottle in a club or in parties. Cocaine and heroin are readily available is the streets of Lagos and Kano (the two states with the highest drug consumption rates). Young, hopeless and jobless youth have taken to drugs like fish to water up and down the country, even the popular "evostic" that shoemakers use to mend your shoes is a drug of choice for many of the "okada rider" type drug user. Don't mess with those okada boys in Abuja, Kano and other big cities in the north, 70% of them are high on something mostly GLUE. Our NDLEA will be fooling themselves chasing "Igbo" farmers up and down, when nowadays science has shown marijuana is not a problem and is not a "gateway drug" as people had previously believed. They will be collecting bribes from importers of real drugs and be wasting public money chasing irrelevancies.
Many do not know but one the greatest and most consistent fighters against the use of hard drugs in Nigeria was the late Afrobrat King FELA ANIKULAPO-KUTI, many who were close to his Kalakuta residence or his Afrika Shrine club know that Fela hated drugs with a passion. One of the biggest sins you could commit was to sell or take hard drugs within Fela's premises. Igbo was freely used, (Baba had more knowledge than many of his peers and what scientist are proving today about the benefits of Igbo Baba already knew) but any known drug dealer or user that was a member of Fela's community was given serious punishment and ultimately ostracized if they failed to change. We need to refocus our energy in the fight against drugs and stop chasing shadows. In big cities all across the nation, young kids are messing with all sorts of dangerous drugs. It is everywhere. As a society we need to begin to seriously tackle it with the full understanding that NIGERIA IS NO LONGER A TRANSIT POINT FOR DRUGS, IT HAS NOW BECOME AN IMPORTANT USER NATION, and with our ineffective law enforcement, we have a time bomb that is about to explode.'

More revealing details about Tiwa and Donjazzy love relationship in the past

This was sent to me by a Trezzy Blog reader @Jude.According to him,Tiwa's relationship with Don Jazzy ended before her marriage to Teebillz and her affair with 2Face was a one-time thing which also happened a long time ago so Tunji bringing it up was a desperate need for points. You will be surprised with the some of the things he said.

About the alleged affair with Dr Sid, the source said "Dr Sid ba wo? Maybe he was the one buying the condoms for Don Jazzy."The source also brought in physical abuse to the list of accusations against TeeBillz ...

"Fact is, they both knew what they were getting into. He beat her up many times and she took it because they both had dirt on each other. I particularly was mad at Tiwa way before she even agreed to marry him. Heck, he was fraudulent way before his coming back to Nigeria. What ruined his relationship with Sauce Kid and co? His other baby mama nko? Go and ask. Ask the big boys in LA about Tee Billions and you will hear his gist. Bi-polar oshi wo? He is toxic, leave his mental issues out of it. Bringing a baby into the toxic relationship pissed off most of us."

Tiwa Savage who is the face of forte oil owned by Billionaire Femi Otedola was blackmailed by her husband about her alleged extra marital affairs.

"He accused her of sleeping with Otedola in the early months of her pregnancy. He slapped and locked her out when she was pregnant due to stories of the affair. She never told us if she indeed slept with the man but her husband kept hammering on it. Even if she did, why didn't he just walk? Let me answer that, he's broke and in debt and needs that Otedola money."

The source also claimed that the ex couple both abused illegal substances. The source said:

"While Teebillz was blowing money on women, booze and coke, Tiwa was smoking fish. Abeg make she no lie. Yes, the guy get craze for head, but Tiwa sef mental."

Soldiers kill bride on her way to wedding in Delta

Ekpan – Tragedy struck on Saturday morning as a mother of a bride was allegedly shot dead by a soldier at the Ekpan Junction, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta.

The deceased was on her way to the wedding ceremony of her daughter when the incident occurred.

The first son of the deceased, Alero said a keke operator flouted the soldier's order when he was flagged down and the soldier opened fire leading to the deceased death.

According to hi, this reason is not enough for one of the soldiers to release bullets on my mother.

The sister told newsmen at the Ekpan Police station that the killer-soldier had been whisked away by members of the JTF contrary to reports that he had been arrested.

She also said that colleagues of the killer-soldier at the roadblock had been taken to Warri Area Command for questioning.

"They have not arrested the soldier. JTF whisked him away. His colleagues at the road block together with him are now at Warri Area Command.

"It was my mother that was shot not my sister that is wedding today. She was coming for the wedding," she said.

The Delta Police Public Relations Officer, DSP. Celestina Kalu, and the Warri Area Commander, Mohammed Muazu, could not be reached for comment.

The gunmen also abducted the four children of the traditional ruler.
Chief Asuquo Abia, the Secretary, Traditional Rulers Council, Esit Eket, told NAN in Esit Eket on Saturday that the gunmen invaded the palace of the paramount ruler in the wee hours of Friday morning.
Abia, who is also the Village Head of Afaha Akpenedi, said the gunmen shot sporadically for over five hours from 1.30 a.m. to 6 a.m.
“The gunmen destroyed part of the palace with dynamites and broke into all the rooms and carted away valuables,’’ he said.
He said the gunmen arrived at the palace on Thursday claiming to be policemen from Abuja on an investigation.
“They later came back the next day around 1.30 a.m. and shot sporadically till 6 a.m. in the morning,’’ Abia said.
Also, a family member, Mr Norbert Assam, said that seven people wounded in the incident were hospitalised in the state.
He said that the paramount ruler’s wife was eight months pregnant when she was kidnapped.
Assam also said that the gunmen escaped the scene with their victims in the paramount ruler’s Jeep.
“They came in two vehicles, a white Hilux van and a sports utility vehicle; they met the paramount ruler and said they came from Abuja to investigate a matter of attempted murder on the life of the monarch.
“We saw two masked men in the Hilux van who they claimed were suspects of the attempted murder case, but they did not allow us to go near the vehicles,’’ Assam said.
He said that gunmen came from the creeks in Esit Eket Local Government Area, adding that they ransacked the palace and took away valuables and money.
Reacting to the incident, the Police Public Relation Officer in Akwa Ibom, ASP. Cordelia Nwawe, said the command was yet to receive a report on the kidnap from the Divisional Police Officer in the area.
Nwawe said that the family had also not intimated the command of the incident, but added that the police was committed to safety of life and property in the area.
NAN reports that this is the second time in two years that unknown gunmen are attacking the palace of the paramount ruler.

‘The idea of real life models being able to fight and genuinely overpower a grown man is what is extremely appealing to the men,’ Cam told Metro.
She got the idea for her brainchild after taking part in a charity boxing event that involved her jumping in the ring – a performance which she says, garnered ‘a lot of interest’.

PHOTOS: President Kenyatta sets ablaze world’s biggest ivory stockpile (‪#‎IvoryBurn‬)

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday set ablaze world’s biggest ivory stockpile in a grand gesture aimed at shocking the world into stopping the slaughter of elephants.
Mr. Kenyatta, who is the first to light the semi-circle of tusks expected to burn for days in Nairobi’s national park, on Friday, demanded a total ban on trade in ivory to end trafficking and prevent the extinction of elephants in the wild.
The historic bonfires is the largest-ever torching of ivory, involving 105 tonnes from thousands of dead elephants, dwarfing by seven times any stockpile burned before.
Another 1.35 tonnes of rhino horn will also be burned, representing the killing of some 340 of the endangered animals.

Africa is home to between 450,000 to 500,000 elephants, but more than 30,000 are killed every year on the continent to satisfy demand for ivory in Asia, where raw tusks sell for around $1,000 (800 euros) a kilo (2.2 pounds).
The pyres prepared in Nairobi contain some 16,000 tusks and pieces of ivory.
Kenya has a long history of ivory burnings, spearheading a wider movement of public demonstrations across the world, but nothing on this scale before.
On the black market, such a quantity of ivory could sell for over $100 million, and the rhino horn could raise as much as $80 million.
Rhino horn can fetch as much as $60,000 per kilo — more than gold or cocaine.
But despite the staggering size of the piles to be burned, totalling some five percent of global stocks, the ivory represents just a fraction of the animals killed every year.

'Only the Security Agencies can answer why they allowed attacks on Nimbo people after giving me assurance of their safety'– Enugu state Governor

Enugu state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has blamed the security agencies for the April 24th attack on Nimbo community by suspected Fulani herdsmen. The governor in a press conference said he had informed security agencies of the impending attacks and they gave him full assurance of the safety of his people. Read the full statement by the governor at the press conference below;

"On Sunday, April 24, 2016, by 7 pm, the night before this carnage took place, I got security information from Uzo-Uwani LGA. That such an incident was likely to take place in the state. I immediately summoned a meeting of State Security Council which commenced by 10 pm.

The meeting was attended by the following: 1. Brigadier General Olufemi Akinjobi who normally represents (GOC) 82 Division Nigerian Army. 2. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nwodibo Ekechukwu 3. State Director of Department State Security Services (DSS), Mr. M. Abdul Malik. 4. The State Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr. Lar Stephen 5. Representatives of the Nigerian Air force, Federal Road Safety Corps and Nigerian Prison Services, who attended as observers.

In the meeting, I received assurances from the Commissioner of Police that the Area Commander of SARS was on ground in Nimbo. -That the Anti-Terrorism Unit was at Nimbo. That he was in contact with the Kogi State Commissioner of Police and reported suspected herdsmen grouping at Odolu in Kogi State preparatory for an attack on Nimbo and Abbi communities.

They told me that the Police mobile force and conventional police were already drafted to Nimbo and Abbi communities. That he was in touch with the Area Commander, Idah, ACP Ikegwuonwu and had linked him with the Area Commander, Nsukka, ACP Monday Kuryas. Both men according to the CP reported that there were no traces of suspected herdsmen in Nsukka or Idah. That he ordered the Area Commander, Nsukka to redeploy to Nimbo. I keep telling them nothing must happen to my people. The Garrison Commander on his part assured me that the Military was already deployed to Nimbo.

Let me state that the State Government provided logistics for these deployments. After receiving these assurances, I felt quite confident that we had done everything possible to forestall an attack on Nimbo. I have narrated what transpired @ Security Council meeting fully conscious of provisions of d Constitution pertaining to my oath of office. I am doing this in due discharge of my duties as Governor.

Sadly, in the early hours of Monday reports of this carnage reached me. More disturbing was the report that the attack of innocent and defenceless citizens were carried out at about 6.30 am.

Reports available to me indicate that apart from the killing & maiming of innocent & defenceless citizens of Nimbo a Church was also burnt. Following this development, I engaged the security agencies in order to ensure that the Nimbo area was secured from further attacks.

I visited Nimbo to establish firsthand d extent of carnage. My visit to Nimbo was revealing. I came face to face with d wounded & bereaved. I saw burnt & damaged personage of Christ Holy Church. I saw a traumatized community in shock & despair. I saw a dead body. I wept. I wondered what has become of our quest for a united, peaceful and prosperous nation.

Now in less than 3months, violent clashes have occurred in Enugu State in Awgu, Nike, Abbi & Nimbo between suspected herdsmen & our people. This situation cannot be allowed to continue. For this reason, I sought audience with the President & Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Our discussions were frank & cordial.

The President condemned this dastardly act & gave directives to the security agencies to fish out these criminals and bring them to justice. I am at once, constituting a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the immediate and remote causes of these attacks.

What happened between 6.30am and 7.30 am on Monday 25th April, 2016 despite assurances from Security Agencies? Only the Security Agencies can answer this question as to why they allowed the attacks despite all the assurances.

Finally, all security agencies in the State are hereby directed to continue to ensure that lives and property of the people of the State and all its residents are protected. Thank you and God bless you. Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi Governor, Enugu State."
