The Day The Great Anambra People Far & Near Stood Up For Obiano!(Photos)

The Day The Great Anambra People Far & Near Stood Up For Obiano!
The Day Anyaoku, Ubah, Ndigbo-Lagos Stood up for Obiano

For the Igbo resident in Lagos,February , 2016 will remain memorable for quite some time; not so much for what it was but for the hope it represents. As they trickled into the Shell Hall of the MUSON Centre to share an evening with Chief Willie Obiano, the Governor of Anambra State, it is doubtful whether most of the members of the Aka Ikenga, League of Anambra Professionals (LAP), Ndigbo Lagos and other Igbo groups who came colourfully dressed knew what to expect. It was a special evening, made more so by Obiano's two-year account of stewardship which he came to share.

But Obiano did not waste time in setting the agenda. With his eyes firmly set on the crescendo, he began by pointing out that the event was a home-coming of sorts to him.
". I bagged both my first and second degrees from the University of Lagos and for over twenty five years, I lived among you here; pursuing my career from the oil and gas sector to banking. Over the years, I made friends here; evolved into a man here, got married and ended my career on a glorious note here. And when I answered the call to serve our beloved State as governor, I got the highest support, encouragement and prayers from you people here."
After establishing his rootedness in the Lagos community, Obiano made a bold admission of his own humanity with an appeal for forgiveness by so many friends and well-wishers who "felt neglected or disrespected by their inability to reach me since I took on the full weight of my office." Quoting Archbishop Desmond Tutu that "forgiveness says you are given a chance to make a new beginning," the governor expressed his sincerest regrets and pleaded for a chance to make things right with anyone who felt done in by the bureaucracy of his office. It was a classic mea culpa that is rare among Nigerian leaders. But it proved very effective for its purpose, soothing frayed nerves and setting the stage for a very lively evening.

Before he plunged into the full range of his two-year Account of Stewardship, Obiano showed enough presence of mind to recall a cardinal vow from his inaugural address. Modulating his voice to meet the occasion, he quoted the passage that "the time has come to prove to ourselves that the entrepreneurial spirit for which our people are known all over the world can take firm roots at home; that together as one, we can be masters of our own house!"  He also recalled that he had assured the people that "under my administration, we have no choice than to decide whether we are truly the sons and daughters of our fathers and true heirs to their long history of pioneering excellence!" He therefore submitted that his achievements in the past 23 months had sufficiently "answered the question of whose children we are."

From this premise, the governor launched out a detailed account of his achievements that covered his economic blueprint known as the Four Pillars of Development with its thirteen Enablers. He deliberately spiced up his account with verbal queues that were carefully laced with Igbo language to elicit reactions from the audience and sustain interest in his narration. His effort drew intermittent applause that bloomed to a crescendo when in conclusion he appealed to Ndi Anambra from across the world to lend a hand in building the state. Pointing out that Anambra had become the safest state in Nigeria, Governor Obiano declared that "the future is looking brighter and brighter but with your assistance and belief in the government of Anambra State, we can take possession of our tomorrow from today." The applause that followed reverberated in the huge hall and set the stage for the documentary that offered a graphic account of his stewardship, aptly titled, "Two Years of Excellence." The documentary is the Obiano story, told from multi-perspectives including his commissioners, key industrialists, farmers, helicopter pilots down to ordinary citizens who bore witness to the change that the governor had wrought in the state in two years. It was the documentary that tellingly drove home the fact of Obiano's high achievements and erased all doubts about his administrative competence.

Consequently, when the documentary ended, what was originally designed as a Question and Answer session to enable the governor get a first-hand feedback from the people became a one-sided flow of praises and encomiums for him. The feedback was understandably much but the most remarkable came from the former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku. For one who is not known to make easy comments on Nigerian leaders, Anyaoku's comment on the night was possibly the greatest endorsement Governor Obiano has received from Anambra's numerous distinguished citizens.

Said he -  "Whenever I visit home I see evidence of Governor Willie Obiano's activities. Driving from Enugu to Onitsha and Obosi, the evidence stares me in the face.  In my last trip I was passing through Awka and there was His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano commissioning one of the bridges. And this evening, what we have all seen struck me deep because what we have all seen in the documentary confirms my view that in Governor Obiano we have a governor with a vision for the state and much more important than that; with a strategy. There are many leaders who have visions. But there are very few leaders, the world over, and when I say the world over, I'm sure you know that I have had interaction with many countries around the world. There are very few leaders who have strategic capacity. And there we have in Anambra State, a leader who has strategic capacity. I am always pained that Anambra State, endowed as it is with human resources, people who have attained great heights not just in Nigeria but all over the world, but if I may talk about Nigeria, it was very striking that when Nigeria celebrated its 50th Independent Anniversary and the federal government decided to recognise 50 people who were deemed to have made outstanding contributions to the development of the country that Anambra State had 5 of the 50. And yet Anambra State, until very recently, didn't have much to write home about. Until very recently, Anambrarians had 80% of their assets invested outside Anambra State. For me, that's a very embarrassing situation. But you couldn't blame them because in Anambra State, they didn't have the grounds for bringing back their investments.  But that is changing and changing very fast under governor Willie Obiano.  He is creating the basis for investment in Anambra State. He is creating the basis for attracting Anambrarians to come home and play some role and they are feeling very safe. That is something we should broadcast to our people all over the world. And for that I must say that he encapsulated in the documentary that we saw the different aspects of the development plans. Really, not just plans but activities, because Nigeria is sometimes very good at drawing plans but not very good at implementing them. But here we have a situation where the plans are clear and the implementation is getting on actively as we pray it does.  And as was said earlier, I would say jidekwa k 'iji! I suspect that when you say to somebody that he should hold on to what he or she is doing, it means that he or she is doing very well. So I say jidekwa k'iji. And finally, on behalf of the aging group that I represent here, I want to thank you, Your Excellency for the excellent work you are doing in our state and indeed when I go to other states you have given me the reason not only to be proud but also to boast."

As would be expected, Anyaoku's vote of confidence drew a very loud applause. But Anyaoku was not alone. Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah, the Chairman of Capital Oil and proprietor of Premiership Club, Ifeanyi Ubah FC who also ran against Obiano in the last gubernatorial race was full of praises for him. Thanking the governor for an excellent performance, Mr. Ubah declared – "Tonight, we have all seen from the documentary that we watched, why governor Obiano is The Sun Governor of the Year. I contested the gubernatorial seat with him and it was a keen contest. But what we want is the progress of Anambra State. I am not a sycophant. I have seen that Governor Obiano is not a greedy governor. He is a contented man. Contentment is the key word. Let's move the state forward. We have so many great men in Anambra State. The time has come for all these great people to rally round the governor so that we can build our state. It is time that we all remember that Anambra is our own and a journey of a million miles starts with a step and a step in the right direction is supporting the government to move the state forward. So, Akpokue, I congratulate you for the award you will be given tomorrow. Don't be afraid. God is with you.  I will support your second term bid."

Following the same line of appraisal, famous Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie wondered whether there would still be some work left for Obiano's successor to do after he had served two terms in office if he maintained the same work rate throughout his years. In specific terms, Edochie told Obiano – "Many people have ruled Anambra State but it was only you that made Awka look like a state capital. We are immensely proud of you.  In the history of Anambra State, no governor has ever called on the people and they responded in full as they did tonight. You are the only one who has achieved this degree of respect among our people. I watched the documentary that we were shown this evening with awe when I realized that you had only spent two years in office.  In two years, you have covered almost every part of Anambra State. When you have done 8 years in office, would there still be some challenges left for your predecessor to handle? We are standing firmly behind you," he declared in a guttural voice.

Buhari Never Promised N5,000 Jobseeker’s Allowance -presidency

The Presidency on Monday said President Muhammadu Buhari never promised to pay unemployed graduates N5,000 monthly.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, said this in an interview with State House correspondents.

Akande, whose boss, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo supervises the economy, spoke while reacting to statement credited to Buhari in which the President ruled out the possibility of his government paying N5,000 monthly allowance to unemployed youths in the country as promised by his party, the All Progressives Congress, ahead of the 2015 presidential election.

He said the provision the government made in the 2016 Budget currently before the National Assembly is to pay N5,000 monthly to one million extremely poor Nigerians, and not the unemployed graduates.

He said the promise to the poor still stands.

He explained that a provision for half a trillion naira had been made in the budget for social investment, which he said included the payment for the extremely poor.

Akande said, "The budget for 2016 which has been submitted to the National Assembly has made an allocation of half a trillion naira, the first time in the history of this country's budget where you have that huge chunk of money allocated for social investment.

"In that N500bn which is half a trillion naira, close to about 20 per cent of the entire budget, there are six social safety net programmes.

"One of them is the Conditional Cash Transfer where government is going to pay N5,000 monthly to the vulnerable and extremely poor Nigerians. That promise stands.

"The President never promised to pay unemployed graduates N5,000; the President never made that promise and the government never made that claim that it will pay N5,000 to unemployed graduates.

"The programme for unemployed graduates is the direct creation of half a million teaching jobs so that they will be trained; 500, 000 unemployed graduates will be trained to teach and they will be deployed to teach, while they are looking for their career paths or jobs. That still stands!

"In addition to that, there is also a scheme to train 370, 000 non-graduate youths for skill acquisition and vocational training. During the time of that training, they will also be paid.

Abducted Bayelsa Ese: I'm 17 Yrs, I'm Here To Be A Muslim, Don't Want To Go Back

A teenager, who was allegedly kidnapped from Bayelsa State to Kano, Ese Oruru, said on Monday she was not interested in reuniting with her family, denying reports that she was abducted from her home in Bayelsa State.

In an exclusive audio recording obtained by PREMIUM TIMES on Monday, the girl also said she eloped with her lover to Kano in order to convert to Islam.
"My name is Aisha Chuwas. I am 17-year-old. I came here to be a Muslim and I will stay here," she said in the audio.
The recording appeared a conversation between Miss Oruru and a police interrogator in Kano.
A human rights lawyer, Huwaila Mohammed, who was given access to the girl at the Zonal Police Headquarters in Kano, said upon interrogation, she understood the girl was never forced to convert to Islam.
"I was there to protect her rights," Ms. Mohammed said. "When I approached her initially, she refused to talk to me. Later she opened up to me.
"She is very defiant. She told me she was born in February 1999. I personally wanted her to reunite with her family, but surprisingly she asked me to tell her mother that she will never return to Bayelsa.
"The police should ensure that she is protected and returned to her family. She is still not matured enough to take such a weighty decision without parental consent."
Ms. Mohammed, who also spoke with Miss Oruru's lover, Yunusa Yellow, said upon interrogation, she established that he is 18-year-old man "not anywhere above 20".
"I was surprised when I saw a very small boy. He is just 18-year old. I was enraged thinking that it was an old man involved in the saga. From the way I see it, they eloped not because of religion but love," she said.
In his reaction, the emir of Kano denied reports that he was holding Miss Oruru.
The emir said on Monday that since September last year, the emirate council handed her over to AIG Zone 1, Tambari Yabo, for onward transportation to her family in Bayelsa.
He said the district head of Kura brought the case to the palace when Mr. Yunusa presented Ms. Oruru to the district office, seeking approval to marry her.
The emir's Chief of Staff, Munir Sanusi, further shed lights on the matter, saying the emir ordered that she be return to her family as she was too young to take such decision.
"The emir attached the girl with the palace emissary, Jakadan Mallam, and one of her relatives to go to the police headquarters," Mr. Sanusi said.
"Since she alleged threats from members of his family, we involved the police to provide security."
Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, said he was on top of the situation as he had spoken to his Kano State counterpart, Abdullahi Ganduje, on the matter.
The governor's Special Adviser on Media, Francis Agbo, said Mr. Seriake had discussed the matter with Mr. Ganduje on several occasions to ensure a faster resolution of the crisis.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that Miss Oruru's "kidnapper" has been arrested and is being detained at the Zone 1 Police Headquarters, Kano.
The spokesman for the zonal police office, Rabilu Ringim, could not be reached to comment for this story.
Mr. Ringim, an assistant superintendent of police, did not answer or return multiple calls and text message.
Audio recording of Miss Oruru to come shortly…

Crude Oil Will Soon Sell For $50 Per Barrel – Kachikwu

At a time when crude oil is selling for about $30 per barrel, Nigeria's Minister for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu has expressed his conviction that the days ahead will see a barrel of the commodity selling for $50.

Speaking with CNBC's Fast Money, the Minister disclosed that he will continue to push for production freeze consensus and was upbeat that OPEC members would be able to come to an agreement to freeze oil production as a way to combat the low oil price.

"The minister for energy in Qatar and the president of OPEC is leading that pact and there is a lot of conversation going on and there's a lot of consensus building on the issue of the freeze.

"Saudi Arabia and Russia are aligned on the issue of a freeze, so I think the chances are very high," Kachikwu stated.

Stressing that movements towards a freeze represent a big step in the right direction, he told the media outfit that he remained confident of his plan to work with OPEC members, adding that "the Saudi's are quite frankly in the forefront of pushing the freeze issue."

The Oil Minister, who explained that a potential output freeze among OPEC members has made him bullish when it comes to oil prices in 2016, said that he expects crude prices to take a major jump by the end of the year.

"I am certainly hoping for prices in the range of $45 to $50. I'm hoping a consensus can be built and that parties can begin to work together across the board, not just OPEC members, but also non-OPEC members, which is what the gulf states and most of us have pushed for. With that, you'll begin to see movement upwards in those prices," he stated.

'Why Buhari Had To Abandon His Campaign Promises'-lai Mohamed

Lai Mohammed, the minister of information, has explained why the federal government led by President Muhammadu Buhari has to downsize some of its campaign promises.
Speaking on Channels TV on Sunday, February 28, the minister said that when the All Progressives Congress (APC) was campaigning, the price of crude was $100 a barrel, but now it is $30 a barrel.

"When you campaign, you say you will do A,B, C, but when you win election, you prioritise. "We are still faithful to those promises, but as you have rightly said, when we were campaigning the price of crude was $100 a barrel, today it is $30 a barrel so definitely, we will have to downsize some of the things intended to do but this does not mean abandoning those promises.

"You do not make a budget for four years, you make an annual budget and in this years budget, we have outlined those parts of the policy that we intend to keep. "Those we cannot keep this year, we will keep in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
This is how government works," he said. Mohammed assured Nigerians that the administration was focused on how to fulfill its campaign promises.

However, he added that the federal government was waiting for the approval of the 2016 budget before it would start implementing its plans. Speaking about the anti-corruption campaign, the minister noted that it may look one-sided because the indicted people are connected to one transaction that is currently being investigated.

Mohammed said that those people facing trial were all connected to the investigation of how the fund meant for the purchase of military equipment was used. He further noted that some members of the APC were also being investigated for other corruption cases which he did not mention. "If you go to the EFCC today and ask them who are the people that are facing charges before them, you are going to find as many APC and as many PDP.

"However, what gives the impression that the fight is one sided is the fact that it is simply one issue that is being investigated now. That is money meant to buy arms which was diverted for other uses and unfortunately, everybody involved in that happened to be in the PDP. From the NSA to others who he had named.

"When you trace this thing, because it is just a particular transaction that is the contract of 2.1 billion dollars that was awarded to equip our soldiers, everybody that you have showed us here have been mentioned as a result of that investigation from that single transaction," he said. The minister explained that it takes between 34 days and seven years to convict a low profile criminal. However, when that criminal is high profile, it takes as long as 10 years to infinity to convict that person, he added.

Meanwhile, Buhari has recently revealed that he will refuse to honour his pledge to grant N5000 to each unemployed Nigerian. The president added that he would rather focus on funding the construction of infrastructure, as well as education, agriculture and mining to create employment opportunities for able bodied young men. Buhari's statement was met with furious reactions by Nigerians who voted for change.

The emir of Kano, Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Monday, ordered the state Sharia Commission to immediately start the process of repatriating and reuniting the 14-year-old teenager, Ese Oruru, allegedly abducted by one Yunusa, forcefully converted to Islam and married off, with her family.

He directed that the repatriation should be done in partnership with the office of the Deputy Inspector General of police, zone 1.

The Emir had originally distanced himself and the Kano emirate council from the purported abduction of Ese who was taken from Bayelsa to Kano by Yunusa.

Babysitter decapitates girl in her care, then walks through streets carrying her severed head and shouting 'Allahu Akbar'(Photos)

A burka-clad babysitter decapitated the little girl in her care before walking through Moscow carrying the child's severed head. The woman shouted 'Allahu Akbar' as she appeared near Oktyabrskoye Pole metro station in the northwest of the Russian capital and threatened to blow herself up.

The victim was a girl identified as Nastya M - and the child's 38-year-old nanny Gyulchehra Bobokulova, from Uzbekistan, has been arrested. The woman was seen pulling the severed head out of a bag and walking around near the entrance to the metro station as police moved in. She is then said to have shouted that she had killed the child and was seen praying shortly before officers swooped.

The source in the Investigative committee told TASS: 'She waited until the parents with the elder child left the flat, then for unknown reason she killed the child, set fire to the apartment and left the scene.

'She was detained at the metro station Oktyabrskoe Pole.'

The dead girl, who is said to have had learning difficulties and could not walk, had a 15-year-old brother. Her family, from the Oryol region, was renting the apartment.

The girl's mother, who works in a wedding shop, was rushed to hospital in an unconscious condition after learning of her daughter's death. Her father is a technician at a mobile phone company.

It came hours after officers found the headless body of a child when they were called to a fire at a block of flats in the city.
