Unknown gunmen murder Lebanese Mathematics teacher in Sokoto

The murder of a Lebanese named Mr Moin Amsuri, a Mathematics Teacher, at the prestigious Nagarta College, Sokoto has been confirmed by the state's police. The deceased was suspected to have been killed by gunmen who are right now on the run. The incident occurred on Thursday at his residence in Yauri flats, Sokoto, and it was reported to the Gwiwa Police Station on the same day. The spokesman Sokoto state police command, Mr El-Mustapha Sani said:

"We are suspecting that the assailants were armed robbers as his Toyota car is still missing."

The spokesman said the command would not relent until the perpetrators of the nefarious act were fished out and brought to justice. The funeral prayer of the deceased was conducted on Friday in Sokoto, according to Islamic rites. It was attended by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Bashir Garba, and Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, among other dignitaries.

The late Amsuri, who taught Mathematics in various secondary schools in the state for over three decades, was buried in Sokoto. The last school where he taught, Nagarta College, is the alma mater of many highly placed Nigerians including second republic President Shehu Shagari and the Premier of the defunct Northern Nigeria, Late Sir Ahamadu Bello.

Jonathan's administration caused the current Recession In Nigeria's Economy - Fashola

Nigeria's Minister for Works, Power and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has stated that the current recession the country's economy is facing was caused by the previous Goodluck Jonathan led administration. Speaking recently in London, Fashola said the previous administration allocated just 15% for capital projects in most of its budgets, which is a precursor to recession. 
"Sometime in March 2015, a little over a year ago, before the Buhari government, a snap survey of four construction companies which I conducted revealed that they had laid off 5, 150 workers because government was not paying these construction companies for work done." 
Fashola said upon assumption of office that he had a meeting with contractors in the sector and discovered that they were owed between two to three years, which he described as seeds of recession, planted and nurtured between 2013 and 2014. He however said the Muhammadu Buhari led government is doing everything in its power to turn things around. 
"From N4 trillion average budget in a time of plenty, this administration set an ambitious N6 trillion with a 30 per cent capex. It pays serious attention to its budget as the article of faith that defines its commitment and since the 2016 budget was passed, construction companies that had demobilised from their sites and laid off workers due to lack of payment since 2014, had been re-mobilising to rail, road, power and other construction sites, and recalling workers.

JAMB withdraws 2016 admission list

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed it has withdrawn the list of recommended candidates for admission earlier sent to the tertiary institutions. In a statement issued in Abuja and signed by Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, he said the withdrawal is to ensure the university senate perform its statutory responsibility. ‎The statement reads...

"This is to ensure that the University Senate perform its statutory responsibility of conducting the selection of candidates and refer it to JAMB for confirmation in line with the admission criteria of merit, catchment and educationally disadvantaged states as directed by the Hon Minister of Education at the policy committee meeting.

"The earlier list was sent to help fast track the process of admission so as to allow other tiers of institutions also conduct their admission. "

Candidates should not panic because this is part of the process of the 2016 admission exercise. JAMB regrets any inconvenience this decision would have caused the tertiary institutions "The Board regrets any inconvenience it's proactive step would have caused the tertiary institutions".

Teenagers rob School take 7 Computers in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested to teenagers, Yinka Adesola and Ahmed Olaleye for allegedly burgling a public Secondary School in the Somolu area of the state. In company with their four friends, they allegedly burgled Angus Memorial Senior High School, Somolu, Lagos.

According to the police, other members of the gang are Lukman Sokoya, Ismaila Adebowale, Wasiu Adejare and Ramon Mukaila. They were arrested on Wednesday, after stealing seven computer sets, a scanner, laptops and a printer belonging to the school.

However, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Lagos State Police Command, had, however, recovered some of the stolen items.

Adesola, in his statement to the police, denied burgling the school, adding that the items were kept in his apartment by Olaleye.

He said, "I knew I had wayward friends who could put me into trouble. I accommodated  Olaleye  when the people he was staying with relocated from Somolu. I offered to assist him because he was my junior in secondary school. Immediately he moved into my apartment, things started going wrong. Neighbours started losing their phones and money. Later, we discovered that he was the one behind the thefts. My parents asked me to eject him and I did.

"But before this time, he had brought seven laptops, a scanner, a desktop computer, and a printer to my room. Although I saw the name of the school on the items, I thought since he was always visiting the school, they gave them to him. I did not know they were stolen.

"When I did not see him for a long time, I attempted to sell the items. I had sold some of them, but others were just lying in the room. I also gave some out to friends and people that I thought could help to sell them."

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the arrests.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has filed a suit at the Federal High Court Abuja, against Uche Ogah and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) seeking the nullification of the certificate of return issued to Ogah by INEC on the grounds of false statement, stressing that the election that produced the governor of Abia State in the 2015 election was the April 25 election and not the April 11 election which INEC declared inconclusive.

PDP, which said that the certificate of return issued to Ogah is null and void and of no effect, is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining Ogah and his agents from parading the invalid certificate of return issued to him by INEC and from being sworn in on the basis of the invalid certificate of return in respect of the inconclusive election of April 11th, 2015.

The party further argued that Governor Ikpeazu contested and won the Abia State governorship election held on April 11 and April 25 2015 as the candidate of the PDP, and was sworn in as the elected Governor of Abia State on May 29th 2015.

In the originating summons filed by Dr. Paul Ananaba SAN, counsel to the PDP, the party among other issues for determination, is asking the court to answer the following questions:

"Whether the information on the certificate of rerun dated 28th day of June , 2016 and issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to Dr. Sampson Uchechukwu Ogah on the 30th day of June, 2016 stating that Dr.Sampson Uchechukwu Ogah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been elected to the office of Governor of Abia State at the election held on the 11th day of April 2015 is false since INEC declared the governorship election of that date inconclusive, that is, no conclusive governorship election was held in Abia State on the 11th day of April, 2015 and no candidate of PDP or of any other political party at the said election including Dr. Sampson Uchechukwu Ogah was ever returned as elected at the said election declared as inconclusive by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

"Whether the certificate of return dated 28th/6/2016 issued by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to Dr. Sampson Uchechukwu Ogah was not invalidated by reason of the fact that neither Dr. Sampson Uchechukwu Ogah or any candidate of any political party was declared and returned as elected into the office of the Governor of Abia State by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the governorship election held on the 11th day of April, 2015 declared inconclusive by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

"Whether there was any conclusive governorship election in Abia State held by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the 11th day of April, 2015 and any return of any candidate including Dr Sampson Uchechukwu Ogah into the office of the Governor of Abia State to warrant the issuance of the questioned certificate of return dated to 28/6/2016 to Dr. Sampson Uchechukwu Ogah of the PDP as having been duly elected to the office of the Governor of Abia State at the Gubernatorial election held on the 11th day of April, 2015.

"Whether the certificate of return dated 27/6/2016 issued by INEC to Ogah of PDP as having been elected into office of the governor of Abia State at the governorship election held on the 11th day of April, 2015 is not liable to be nullified as invalid, null and void in that no conclusive governorship election was concluded by INEC in Abia State on April 11th, 2015.

"Whether the election into the office of the governor of Abia State held on the 11th day of April, 2015 was declared inconclusive and whether a certificate of return can be validly issued to Uche Ogah by INEC based on the inconclusive governorship election conducted by INEC on the 11th day of April, 2015."

The party also argued: "That there was no conclusive governorship election held by INEC on the 11th day of April, 2015 and return of any candidate as elected to the office of Governor of Abia State to warrant the issuance of the certificate of return dated 28/6/2016 by INEC to Uche Ogah as having been elected to the office of the Governor of Abia State at the election held on 11th day of April, 2015."

PDP also wants the court to determine: "whether the invalid certificate of return issued to Ogah by INEC can be relied upon by the Chief Judge of Abia State, the President of Customary Court of Appeal Abia State or any judicial officer in Nigeria to swear in Ogah as governor of Abia State."

The party further seeks a declaration, "that the certificate of return dated 28th day of June, 2026 issued by INEC to Ogah as having been elected to the office of the Governor of Abia State at the governorship election held on the 11th day of April, 2015 is null and void and of no effect whatsoever by reason of false statement or information contained therein of the election of uche Ogah to the office of the governor of Abia State at the governorship election held on the 11th day of April, 2015 when no candidate emerged as elected."

It will be recalled that the Abia State chapter of the PDP had called for investigation and probe of the certificate of return issued to Ogah by INEC, describing it as invalid and erroneously issued.

The State Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Don Ubani, who addressed the press in Umuahia said: "The Party, hereby, recollects that the Governorship election of 2015 in Abia State came in two phases, that of April 11 which was declared inconclusive by the Electoral body and that of April 25 which conclusively declared and confirmed Okezie Ikpeazu as the Governor-elect of Abia State;

"That Governor Okezie Ikpeazu's Certificate of return is a product of the elections of April 11 and April 25of 2015, as properly reflected on the Certificate of return.

"The Party vehemently rejects the Certificate of return erroneously issued to Mr. Ogah for, among many other reasons, the enormous fact that the Certificate of return failed to reflect the fact that the Governorship election took place on two different days."

Fayose Storms Esuru Ekiti To Reconcile 2 Factions Of PDP(Photos)

The man of the people Gov. Ayodele Fayose was in Esuru Ekiti state yesterday for the reconciliation of the two factions in Ekiti PDP.

Serving Corp members in Esure Ekiti were pictured welcoming him/show him support with placards with various inscriptions on them.Residents of Ekuru also trooped out to welcome him while Fayose was seen acknowledging cheers from them.

Speaking at the meeting,he urged all the members to embrace peace.He also told them that Ekiti state is one and urged them not to  fight more.

Let’s Talk Turkey about Turkey – By Reuben Abati

I was shocked by the trenchant reaction to my piece on the July 15 attempted coup in Turkey from at least two persons. The piece titled "Nigerians and the Failed Coup in Turkey" (The Guardian, Sunday, July 17) had fetched a mail and direct messages from a concerned Nigerian who objected to my description of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a bad guy- an intolerant, arrogant, temperamental dictator who after July 15 could become even more authoritarian.  The fellow praised Erdogan and spoke glowingly about how well the Turkish economy has fared under his watch. I also got a list of current economic indicators on Turkey sent to me. 

I assured the fellow that I was not in any way in support of any anti-democratic move, and that the article was not about the Turkish economy but Erdogan's politics and leadership. I added that while he was perfectly entitled to his admiration of Erdogan, I had no reasons to change my views and that he should beware of Embassy propaganda.  It was a polite, private discussion. But there was nothing polite about the other reaction that caught my attention. It was in form of a scurrilous, very badly written press statement titled "Reuben Abati Should Keep His Stinking Pen" by a so-called Center for Human Rectitude, posted on Facebook, and signed by one Yusuf Jimoh Aweda, with the pompous title of a Director.

Aweda's abusive statement praises Erdogan, defends Turkish Airline, and lists Erdogan's achievements as the President of Turkey. I smiled, wondering why Aweda is yet to relocate to Turkey. Since the failed coup, President Erdogan has behaved true to prediction. Over 15, 000 persons have been detained in connection with the coup. More than 140 media houses have been shut down. Arrest warrants have been issued for about 90 journalists. A total of 934 schools, 15 universities, 104 Foundations, and 35 health institutions have also been closed down.  Over 60, 000 civil servants have been sacked; 50, 000 passports have been cancelled.  More than 40% of military chiefs have been fired. Erdogan obviously has more enemies outside the coup plotters.

Curiously, any foreigner who has tried to criticize or advise the Turkish government and Erdogan has also been told to mind their business. "Some people give us advice. They say they are worried. Mind your own business!" says President Erdogan.  As at last week, about 18, 000 persons have been detained at various times since January, for allegedly insulting President Erdogan - the victims include a German satirist, a Dutch-Turkish journalist, a former Miss Turkey and a UK artist. But in what he calls "a one-off gesture of goodwill", Erdogan now says he will "withdraw all the cases regarding the insults made against him." How magnanimous! Yusuf Aweda certainly knows that it is "an act of felony" to say anything against President Erdogan, and so, he had to tell Abati to keep his stinking pen and mind his business. Sorry to disappoint you, Erdogan lover, your hatchet piece is in the dustbin where it belongs.

The attempted coup in Turkey stands condemned, nonetheless, and it is perfectly within the rights of the Turkish government to fish out the perpetrators and ensure that justice is done, but it seems Erdogan is personally using this as an opportunity to witch-hunt his perceived enemies and enforce a form of "political cleansing."

The official Turkish position is that the brain behind the coup is US-based, Islamic preacher and writer, Fetullah Gulen, 75, founder of the Alliance for Shared Values and the Gulen Movement (known as Hizmet Hareketi in Turkey). Gulen is Erdogan's arch-rival and nemesis. He has been accused at various times in the past of trying to topple the Erdogan government in conspiracy with the American CIA and FBI. Ironically, Erdogan and Gulen were both friends until they fell out in 2013, and Gulen became a marked target, and Turkey's "most wanted man." He fled to the United States. Erdogan has asked for his extradition but the Americans do not believe that Gulen, who has spoken openly against violence, and terrorism, and who is a progressive Muslim, with a large following in Turkey, is the terrorist Erdogan claims he is. It also does not matter that both Gulen and the United States promptly condemned the July 15 coup attempt and that US authorities have spoken about how important Turkey is to the United States.

Erdogan has ordered a witch-hunt of anyone or any institution associated with the Gulen Movement.  Turkish officials, trying to give a dog a bad name to hang it, refer to the movement as Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), thus reducing Turkish politics post-July 15 to a contest between two prominent political rivals.

Erdogan is perhaps the most popular Turkish leader since Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and the people of Turkey who are opposed to the crazy act of July 15 have every reason to be angry, but even in identifying and punishing the culprits, basic standards of justice and fairness must be met, and whatever allegations made must be proven to be true and correct.  This is important not just for Turkey but also the rest of the world, as the Turkish inquisition against Fetullah Gulen and associates has assumed an international dimension, with countries like Nigeria now involved.

Nigeria has been mentioned twice in the Turkish drama. First, it was the Nigerian bank, the United Bank for Africa (UBA).  Second, the reference was to Turkish schools and institutions in Nigeria. With regard to the former, US General John F. Campbell (rtd), a former Commander of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, was said to have  channelled over $2 billion to the coup plotters in Turkey as part of a CIA operation, through the UBA. The bank has denied any form of involvement but the Turkish authorities will expect an investigation.  Nigerian laws do not support terrorism in any shape. But could any Nigerian bank have moved $2 billion in the last six months without the Central Bank knowing?

Besides, the Turkish ambassador to Nigeria, Hakan Cakil, has formally asked the Nigerian government to shut down 17 schools and other institutions in Nigeria allegedly associated with the Gulen Movement. YeniSafak News, a pro-government Turkish newspaper was in fact categorical in its headline: "Turkish envoy seeks closure of Gulen schools in Nigeria" (July 29). But are they really Gulen schools?Interestingly, some Nigerian newspapers reported that Turkey has "ordered" the Nigerian Government to close down some schools! Can an Ambassador or any country give orders to the Nigerian government?

Hakan Cakil says: "We are starting some legal procedures to take the name 'Turkish' out of the name of the schools," he added. "They are not the schools of the Turkish government. According to the ambassador, there are other establishments run by the Gulen group in Nigeria such as hospitals. He said all the FETÖ-linked bodies raised funds that were used to further the group's interests." Is this evidence-based? Evidence, please!

Nigeria has cordial relations with Turkey. Diplomatic protocol requires Nigeria, in the face of a formal complaint as stated, to look into the allegations. Besides, Nigeria frowns at terrorism and so it would be expected to act on the request from Turkey. As a member of the Organization of Islamic Co-operation (OIC), Nigeria may also soon find itself confronted with a draft resolution that formally designates FETO as a terrorist organization, and Fetullah Gulen as a terrorist.  The only problem is that it is only the Erdogan government and its supporters who are referring to the Gulen Movement as a terrorist organization. I urge caution. Nigeria must resist the temptation to join the solidarity bandwagon. It must conduct its own investigations and insist on credible evidence.

The Turkish authorities have also appealed to other countries to close down businesses, schools and other institutions that may be in any way associated with the Gulen Movement. Some of the countries promptly obliged. Jordan, Azerbaijan, Somalia, Niger, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, have shut down many schools so labeled claiming the need to act in solidarity with Turkey and promote bilateral relations. A similar request has also been tabled before Cambodia, Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Turkey's position is that the Gulen Movement or what they call FETO uses education to conscientize young people, globally, to prepare them to become anti-state elements, and that Gulen's strategy is to infiltrate all sectors of Turkey and go beyond to build an international network. The insistence that the cleric is a terrorist will obviously be of grave interest to the international community, terrorism being the scourge of the moment.  Still, we should not act based on Turkey's say-so, in the name of solidarity.  A proper understanding of the political sub-text to the Turkish drama recommends this as the best option in the circumstances.

For the record, the proprietors of the Nigerian Turkish International Colleges have fought back dismissing the request by the Turkish Ambassador as "spurious, baseless, unfounded, of poor taste and a display of crass ignorance." They insist that the "NTIC is not a Turkish government-run institution but a privately funded institution by a group of Turkish investors."  What can be said is that these investors who have built 17 schools in Nigeria, a university (The Nigerian Turkish Nile University -1998) and a hospital (The Nigerian Turkish Nizamiye Hospital, Abuja- 2013) have done more to promote good people-to-people relations between Nigeria and Turkey than all the diplomats ever posted to Nigeria from Turkey.

They have promoted international friendship and helped to build the Turkish brand among the Nigerian consumers of the high quality services that they offer.  More importantly, they do not have any sordid reputation as terrorist havens, instead they are very popular among Nigerians. From a strategic viewpoint, we need such investments in Nigeria and should not jeopardize the interest of many Nigerian students (who enjoy scholarships in those schools by the way) and the many middle-class patients who rather than travel abroad take advantage of the quality services at the Turkish hospital in Abuja. What we may well be dealing with is blackmail, not terrorism, given what we know.  Erdogan should by all means look for his coup plotters, but he should not shut down Nigerian schools and institutions. Having stayed for so long in power, he is definitely guilty of what Fetullah Gulen calls "power poisoning". Yusuf Aweda, chew on that and drink water on top!
