On Thursday, President Donald J. Trump awarded the Public Safety Medal of Valor to David Bailey, Crystal Griner, Nicole Battaglia, Kevin Jobe, and Alexander Jensen at the Public Safety Medal of Valor Ceremony. These U.S. Capitol Police Agents and Alexandria Police Officers exhibited extraordinary courage above and beyond the call of duty, as the first responders to the Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field shooting on June 14, 2017.

While practicing for the annual congressional baseball game, a gunman opened fire on members of the Republican Congressional baseball team. Among the injured were Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise, U.S. Capitol Police Special Agents David Bailey and Crystal Griner, former Congressman Matt Mika, and Congressional aide Zachary Barth.
The Medal of Valor ceremony was held in the East Room of the White House. In addition to the Medal of Valor recipients, other guests included Congressman Scalise’s wife, Jennifer Scalise, MedStar Washington Hospital Center Director of Trauma Surgery, Dr. Jack Sava, and MedStar Washington Hospital Center Director of Orthopedic Trauma, Dr. Robert Golden. The President expressed deep gratitude for the impressive work of the first responders as well as prayers for the victims.
“The assault on June 14th reminded us that evil exists in this world. But it also reminded us that heroes walk in our midst, that love triumphs over tragedy, and that our resolve is stronger than ever,” President Trump stated.
The Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor is awarded to a public safety officer who has exhibited exceptional courage, extraordinary decisiveness, presence of mind, and unusual swiftness of action, regardless of his or her own personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect human life. President Trump is proud to honor the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect Americans.
