RSG TO DEVELOP A STRATEGY PLAN ON NUTRITION
The Wife of the Rivers State Governor, Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike has declared that the state government will develop a functional Strategy Plan of Action for Nutrition to help develop the health of the people.
The Rivers Governor's Wife also stated that the State Government will adopt the National Policy for Food and Nutrition Security.
Justice Suzzette Wike disclosed this on Monday while delivering a keynote address titled "Prioritizing Investment in Nutrition - Key to Sustainable Development in South-South States" at a 2 Day Zonal Nutrition Summit organized by the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning in collaboration with the United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF in Port Harcourt
She said that the State Government will develop a Strategy Plan of Action for Nutrition in specific sectors and intensify monitoring and supervision to ensure proper domestication and implementation of the plan at the various Ministries,Departments and Agencies and Public Health Care Centres.
She expressed her desire to help stakeholders turn the tide against increased spate of nutrition-related mortality in the State as well as mobilize wives of Governors of other South-South States to invest in scaling up interventions in nutrition to achieve the 2030 Development Agenda and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal.
Justice Nyesom-Wike said ongoing reconstruction of four zonal hospitals in Bori, Degema, Ahoada and Etche by the State Government and the development of the framework for the Universal Health Insurance Scheme will give more Rivers people and residents access to quality health Care services and protect lives especially at the rural areas.
She lauded UNICEF for creating a field office in the zone and for ensuring that Rivers women and children thrive to develop to their full potentials.
In his remarks , the State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Isaac Kamelu noted that the ministry is at the forefront in ensuring that government policies on nutrition is effectively coordinated.
He thanked the State Governor for his efforts to ensure that the State has a robust partnership with donor agencies.
Also speaking, the Chief of Field Office, UNICEF, Mr. Wilbroad Ngambi and Dr. Chris Isokpungwu of the Nutrition Division, Federal Ministry of Health said the summit with the theme "Leverage In-Country Resources for Better Nutrition Outcomes - Key to Sustainable Development" is geared towards reducing the high rate of malnutrition in the zone and called for greater collaboration and sensization to achieve set goals.
Highpoint of the summit was the decoration of the wife of the Governor as "Nutrition Ambassador".
